Previously, many believed that Brachiosaurus and other brachiosaurids were aquatic. The animals were considered too large to survive on land. The main evidence for this was considered to be Brachiosaurus nostril which was placed high up on the head. Thanks to that, the animals could be almost completely covered with water but still be able to breathe. Later studies have shown, however, that the water pressure would have crushed the lungs of an adult animal if it was almost completely water-covered. The skeleton also had cavities to reduce weight. Therefore, scientists today are convinced that Brachiosaurus and all other sauropods lived on land.
Description
Like other sauropods, the Brachiosaurus was a distinct herd animal, and like other sauropods, it seems to have thrived best on large plains near lakes or other streams. Unlike the Diplodocides, Brachiosaurus and the other brachiosaurids could probably not stand on their hind legs. However, the body structure meant that they automatically reached high up in the trees to graze.
Dimensions: 7.5cm x 6.5cm
Made of PVC and phthalate free.
Age: 3+
This model is from 2007
Product Number: 88200
