The brown bear is believed to be descended from Ursus etruscus. The oldest fossil found is about half a million years old and was found in China. The species reached Europe approximately 250,000 years ago, and North America shortly thereafter.

The brown bear exhibits a range of local variations across its large distribution area in terms of size, weight, skull shape and color of fur. In general, it can be said that the brown bear is larger the further north it occurs.
