Some sources recognize two types of Haflinger, a shorter, heavier type used for draft work and a taller, lighter type used for pleasure riding, light driving and under-saddle competition.
Description
History:
Although the exact origin of the breed is unknown, it is believed that the horse already existed in the Middle Ages. Two theories exist for the origin of the Haflinger horse. The first theory claims that the Haflinger is a descendant of the horses abandoned by the Goths in the Tyrolean valleys of central Europe in 555 BCE. The abandoned horses may have been influenced by oriental horses, which may explain the characteristics of the Haflinger that are reminiscent of the Arabian thoroughbred. The second theory states that the Haflinger is descended from a stallion from the Kingdom of Burgundy that was sent to Margrave Louis of Bradenburg by his father Louis IV. It was sent as a wedding gift at the wedding of Princess Margarete Maultasch of Tyrol in 1342.
