The monarch occurs above all in America. It is a hardy butterfly that can fly very far and in the fall can fly from Canada to Mexico to overwinter. This is then not done by one individual, but over three to four generations.
Description
Exciting facts:
In the fall, the butterfly moves to hibernate. In North America, those that occur west of the Rocky Mountains winter in California and others in Mexico. Monarch wintering grounds in California have been known for more than a century, and these cover a very small area where large numbers of butterflies congregate. The wintering sites in Mexico, on the other hand, were not discovered until 1975. They comprise about thirty small sites in a mountainous area, the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, about 100 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. The noble fir Abies religiosa grows there. At an altitude of approximately 3,000 metres, the butterflies spend the winter in huge gatherings in the noble firs.
