The Shire horse is a large cold-blooded work horse that originates from England.
Shire horses are mainly used as draft horses and are considered the world's largest horse breed, with a withers height that for stallions always exceeds 170 cm. The record for the largest horse ever is held by the English shire stallion Mammoth, born in 1848, who had a withers height of 2.18 meters and weighed 1.5 tonnes. Despite its size, the Shire is somewhat slimmer than many other cold-blooded horses, such as the stout Ardennes or the Percheron.
