Dimorphodon was a genus of short-tailed flying lizards that lived 180-200 million years ago during the Late Jurassic to Early Jurassic period. The type species of the genus D. macronyx, which was discovered by paleontology and Richard Owen in 1859.

Description
Like most other early pterosaurs, Dimorphodon had a long tail that it used as a rudder in flight. Although Dimorphodon spent almost all of its time in the air, it was also capable of walking on all fours and climbing.

Scientific name: Dimorphodon, meaning two-shaped tooth

Characteristics:

Dimorphodon, like most other early pterosaurs, still had teeth. It had an unusually large head and two different types of teeth; long, pin-shaped teeth at the front of the jaws and smaller, flattened, blade-like teeth at the back. This is unusual because almost all reptiles do not have more than one type of tooth in their jaws. Compared to later pterosaurs, the wings are quite short (although Dimorphodon was a good flyer), and the neck was short and strong.

Size and Color:

This model is 5.75 inches tall and has an 8.5 inch wingspan. The body is orange-brown, and the wings have a dark blue and red pattern. The head is a lighter red color to emphasize its large size.

Dimorphodon is part of the Wild Safari® Prehistoric World collection
