Young mandrake plants have a scream that can cause serious injury, and hearing protection is necessary to avoid damaging hearing, while adult mandrakes scream is fatal. The mandrake's leaves are lush, and have a green color with a violet tinge.
Mandrakes are included in the teaching of Herbology for second year students at Hogwarts. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Professor Sprout, Neville Longbottom and several other students throw mandrakes at the Death Eaters.
