The cave bear is an extinct species within the bear family that lived in Europe and northern Africa during the last Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. It has received the trivial name cave bear as most fossils are found in caves. The cave bear was about 30 percent larger than a normal brown bear, and unlike this one, is believed to have been mainly herbivorous rather than omnivorous. It may have become extinct because the climate changed, which caused its main food to disappear. It is also believed that prehistoric man may have played a decisive role in the extinction of the cave bear.
