The oldest known fossil finds of mammoths are from the Pleistocene geological epoch (1.8 million–11,550 years ago) and the last surviving members of the woolly mammoth species probably became extinct on the Wrangel Islands in Siberia approximately 5,000–6,000 years ago since.
