Pteranodon was a large pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous, about 85 million years ago. Although often grouped with dinosaurs, the pterosaurs were a separate, related group of flying reptiles. While they didn't have feathers like birds and some dinosaurs, some pterosaurs were covered in hair-like structures called pycnofibers.

Description
Pteranodon was the first pterosaur discovery in the United States and the first pterosaur to be found anywhere outside of Europe. Othniel Charles Marsh made the discovery in 1870. Before Pteranodon's discovery, all pterosaurs known to science had teeth.

Pteranodon's distinctive arms actually varied greatly in size among the known examples, leading researchers to believe that it was likely used for display, rather than any practical function. It was once believed that the weapon served as a rudder in flight, as larger examples of the weapon were pointed and blade-like. But others were much smaller and may represent a difference between old and young Pteranodons, or males and females. A similar related species (known as Pteranodon sternbergi or Geosternbergia) has a much flatter plate than P. longiceps.

Scientific name: Pteranodon (“Toothless Wing”) longiceps

Characteristics:

Although the pterosaurs flew, this Pteranodon figure is placed at rest on the ground, showing off its large and dynamic weapon. It was long debated whether pterosaurs walked on two legs or four, until pterosaur tracks were discovered indicating a four-legged walk.

Size and Color:

This Pteranodon model is about 3 ½ inches tall and 4 inches long, about the size of a muffin (although much less tasty...don't eat it). The body is brown above and cream below, with black claws on the hands and feet. The beak is orange with a red tip, and its crest is a vivid orange with black markings.

The Pteranodon is part of the Wild Safari® Prehistoric World collection
