The African wild dog is a mammal in the canidae family, thus distantly related to wolves, coyotes and the domestic dog, and the only species in the genus Lycaon.
Description History
African wild dog existed in historical times in almost all of Africa south of the Sahara. It was only missing in low-lying rainforests and in overly dry deserts. Today, the species is extinct in 25 of 39 states. Larger populations remain only in southern Africa and southern parts of eastern Africa. Today, the African wild dog is highly threatened (EN).
