* Voted Best Prehistoric Animal Toy Figure 2018 by Prehistoric Time Magazine *
Although similar to the woolly mammoth, the American mastodon is not closely related. The mastodons split from the other members of the Proboscidea about 25 million years ago. The most famous of these animals was the American mastodon, which was the last of the group to disappear about 11,000 years ago.
Description
Although the genus name Mastodon is no longer used as the scientific name, it is still the most widely used informal common name for these giant elephant-like animals.
Mastodons (or mammothids) were not as large as most mammoths or even as modern elephants, and were not as widespread. While most mastodons disappeared along with other megafauna around 11,000 or 10,000 years ago, it is believed that small groups of these animals may have survived until as late as 4,000 years ago.
Scientific name: Mammut americanum
Properties:
Like mammoths, the American mastodon has small ears and two long curved tusks. Although still covered with a layer of fur unlike modern elephants, this hand-painted and highly detailed mastodon figure's fur is shorter than that of the woolly mammoth.
Size and Color:
Our American Mastodon figure measures 8 inches long and 4 ½ inches tall. The coat is a light brown, with darker brown to the tip of the tail and has light cream colored teeth.
The American Mastodon is part of the Wild Safari® Prehistoric World collection.
