At first glance, the pygmy hippopotamus may look like a baby hippo, but it is actually a species of its own – fully grown at about half the size and only a quarter the weight of the common hippo. Because it lives more on land than in water, it has less prominent nostrils and a compact body shape suited to the West African rainforest.
