The gray wolf is the largest member of the dog family and is believed to be the ancestor of all domestic animals. Wolves are highly intelligent and social predators that can hunt large prey such as bison and moose.
Description
The species was once the world's most widespread mammal, but it has been extirpated from large parts of Western Europe, southern Asia, Mexico and significant parts of North America. Wolf occurs mainly, but not exclusively, in wilderness. Its range has been greatly reduced by deliberate persecution due to wolf predation on game and livestock, along with the fear of attacks on humans.
