Unlike other members of the Testudines order, tortoises are not sea dwelling and live on land. Known for their large and spacious shells, tortoises can withdraw their heads, tail, and all of their limbs inside their protective carapaces when they feel threatened.

Accurately modeled and meticulously hand-painted, this tortoise figurine exhibits the large domed shell and long limbs that are characteristic of many tortoise species. The texture and ridges along this model's limbs are also faithful, depicting the thick plates of dead skin that tortoises develop over their lifetime for extra protection!
