From almost invisible eggs, small striped larvae emerge. They begin feeding on the surrounding leaves immediately, storing food for the upcoming pupal stage. After two weeks they form a pupa, after another two weeks a monarch butterfly emerges.

The monarch occurs above all in America. It is a hardy butterfly that can fly very far and in the fall can fly from Canada to Mexico to overwinter. This is then not done by one individual, but over three to four generations.
