Ladybugs are known by several other names: lady beetles, ladybug beetles and ladybird beetles.

Whatever you call them, these beetles belong to the family Coccinellidae.

All ladybugs develop through a four-step life cycle called complete metamorphosis.

Description
1. Eggs

The ladybug's life cycle begins with an egg that she usually lays on a plant with a suitable prey for her offspring to eat when they hatch; aphids are a favorite food.

2. Larva

In two to ten days, ladybug larvae emerge from their eggs.

They look much like small alligators, with elongated black bodies with colorful spots or ribbons.

3. Puppa

In its pupal stage, the ladybug is usually yellow or orange and remains completely still, attached to a leaf, throughout this step.

4. Ladybug

After 1-2 weeks, a fully developed ladybug comes out.

The life cycle of a ladybug is part of the Safariology® collection.
