This stingray has many known names, including Black-spotted Stingray, Black-spotted Stingray, Round Ribbontail Ray, Speckled Stingray, and its color is dark with lighter gray and white spots. This ray can grow up to six meters between the fins and is found in tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans.
Description
The marble coat has a very variable skin color, from light gray to almost black, with large spots or smaller spots covering the upper body. The common name Marble Ray comes from the mottled appearance of the more mottled examples, with a darker body color and lots of closely spaced light, irregular spots, giving it a marbled appearance.
These rays are not aggressive and approach divers and swimmers out of curiosity, making them popular fish for ecotourism. However, like all stingrays, they have a poisonous long barb on their tail that they will use to defend themselves if provoked or harassed.
This species is listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), largely due to overfishing and habitat loss. In some areas it is fished intentionally while in other areas it is caught accidentally. Either case can harm the population due to its slow reproduction rate. Its coral reef habitat is also threatened by climate change.
