The tufted rhinoceros is the largest of today's rhinoceros species. It is also called the white rhinoceros, even though it is not white at all. White comes from Dutch widje which means wide and refers to the wide upper lip adapted to grazing grass.

Description
In the 1880s it was thought that the white rhinoceros was extinct, but then 20 individuals were discovered in the wilds of Natal Province. There are today approximately 20,000 blunt rhinoceroses, the majority in South Africa. It shows that through protection and good management, species can be saved from extinction.
