Distinctive for the breed is that the rooster has rather long, sweeping tail feathers. The phoenix molts its tail feathers every year and therefore cannot grow tails longer than about 150 cm.

The Phoenix is a light chicken breed that came to Europe from Japan at the end of the 19th century. It is a very selectively bred breed that is mainly kept as an ornamental breed. It has been bred from the Japanese onagadori breed.
