It is the national bird of the United States and is one of the strongest American symbols. It has been protected since 1940.

Description
The clear white plumage on the head and tail only develops when the birds reach sexual maturity at the age of four or five.

The young are ready to fly when they are about 11 weeks old, but are fed for another five or six weeks until they become independent.
