A bird of prey found throughout North America, it is actually a sea eagle, meaning it lives near rivers, lakes and tidal waters, and its diet consists almost exclusively of aquatic animals. It is the largest eagle native to North America.
Description
Currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, the Bald Eagle is considered the most populous of the eight species of sea eagle. However, this was not always the case. In the mid-20th century, the eagle population dropped from 500,000 breeding pairs to as low as 400 due to a variety of causes, the most common being pesticides. However, extensive recovery efforts made it possible for the Bald Eagle to return to the wild.
