It is the earliest known armoured dinosaur and the ancestor of the ankylosaurs.
Description
Although Scelidosaurus is not classified as a stegosaurus, it is believed to be one of the ancestors of the stegosaurs.
It is not difficult to understand why, because the skin was covered with many small bone plates.
But unlike the large, raised plates of the stegosaurs, the plates of Scelidosaurus were small and low.
Some plates were grooved, others cone-shaped. Scelidosaurus seems to have been a slow herbivore with a small head but with a longer tail in relation to body length than a stegosaurus. The hind legs were longer than the front legs.
